上周关于我的话题进行了有趣的讨论 cheap vs. quality vs. 豪华 post on 有机 food and whether or not it is a “luxury”.

In the post, I had given an example of a cheap vs. a quality good: $3 per pound pink slime vs. a $10 grass-fed 有机 steak, to which a reader, 麦克风, responded:

I would absolutely classify an 有机 diet as a 豪华 for a few specific reasons.

Firstly, there are many people throughout the world, including within North America, who do not have the 豪华 of refusing food based on its method of production – since their only alternative is starvation. 的re is also a large slice of the population who simply can’t afford to eat 有机, because doing so would mean sacrificing money required for other living expenses.

Secondly, there are no solid, peer reviewed studies that suggest 有机 food is healthier than non-organic food. In the case of some fortified GMO’s, the exact opposite may be true.

I’ve been purchasing 有机 whenever I can – not 100% –但可能至少有50%。 和我’ve also cut the cost of buying 有机 through some 好市多好吃的散装食品交易.

我实际上是在购买“luxury” when I opt for 有机 food?

  • maintaining strict physical separation of 有机 products from non-certified products

强化转基因’可以辩论,但是’s hard to argue that synthetic chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and antibiotics (in meats) should be a central part of a 健康 and balanced diet. 的y were never sprinkled on top of the good ole’我们一起成长的美食金字塔。

例如,非有机草莓经常喷洒 甲基碘, a toxic fumigant that has been shown to cause late-term miscarriages, groundwater contamination, and is used in labs to create cancer cells in animals. 的 bees that pollinate both the non-organic and 有机 food we eat are being killed off by pesticides. And we are in the midst of a well documented

转基因生物’s, fertilizers, and pesticides, in the short-term, have been proven to reduce crop loss and yield more output per acre of land. Antibiotics/growth hormones can lead to more meat in a faster amount of time or with less space per animal required. 的 result is more output and more output = lower average prices. And when 有机 certification is not a goal, there is less procedure and labor involved that would add to costs as well.

中位数家庭在食品上花费$ 6,458, while median income is approximately 8X that. A shift to an extreme 100% 有机 might increase total costs by 20-30%, maybe less if you find a good warehouse deal. And 75% of U.S. families knowingly purchase at least some 有机 食物。

Just because an item is not the cheapest alternative, I do not think that means it is, by default, a 豪华 to be avoided due to higher cost. And even if we all agreed 有机 food is a 豪华, does that mean we should avoid it?

Is 有机 food a 豪华?
